Tyca 2021 Spoken Word in full
Broadcast by Facebook Live and BBC Radio Somerset, this forms part of the TYCA Youth Festival for 2021. The performers are all delivering original pieces of their own devizing.
This year Tyca developed its workshop programme delivering 30 arts workshops in the community. We responded to the pandemic and the mental health needs of young people to help them express themselves creatively through the arts.
These workshops were set up in direct response to the well documented impact of Covid 19 on young people.
Participation in the arts is well evidenced for its therapeutic qualities and ability to build confidence and we wanted to offer young people an opportunity to try out and engage in a variety of art forms which included - Spoken Word/Rap, DJ ing, singing, circus skills and visual arts.
We worked with our partner The One Team - and Youth Matters to deliver a series of arts and wellbeing workshops to children and young people at North Taunton Youth Centre, Taunton Academy and the Albemarle Centre.
We also delivered an intensive Graffiti Art project with pupils at Heathfield School and with young people in the Priorswood area who created a fantastic graffiti mural both on their youth club walls and at the shelter in Lyngford Park as part of a project to brighten up the facilities in the park and make it a more welcoming space.
We hope to continue our work with these communities and others as part of a year long programme of activity leading up to our annual festival.
These workshops were supported by funding from The One Team, Somerset Community Foundation, Arts Taunton and Somerset West & Taunton.
